Job Function

The primary function of the Laboratory Technician is to ensure the efficient operation, safety, and technical support of Civil Engineering laboratories in order to facilitate high-quality teaching, applied training, and research activities. The role supports the practical implementation of engineering principles by maintaining laboratory readiness, assisting in experimental procedures, ensuring compliance with testing standards, and safeguarding laboratory equipment and users.

Responsibilities

A. Laboratory Operations

  • Prepare laboratory equipment, materials, and specimens for undergraduate practical sessions.
  • Assist faculty members during laboratory classes and research experiments.
  • Conduct standard civil engineering laboratory tests (e.g., concrete, soil, asphalt, water quality, and structural testing) in accordance with ASTM, BS, or relevant standards.
  • Demonstrate proper use of laboratory equipment to students.

B. Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Apply laboratory safety regulations and ensure compliance with institutional and national safety standards.
  • Ensure proper storage and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Maintain safety data sheets (SDS) and laboratory safety documentation.
  • Conduct safety briefings for students before laboratory sessions.

C. Administrative Support

  • Prepare laboratory schedules in coordination with academic staff.
  • Monitor laboratory usage and maintain equipment utilization records.
  • Assist in procurement specifications for laboratory equipment and materials.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in civil engineering laboratories (academic or industrial).

Skills

  • Experience in handling civil engineering testing equipment and laboratory instruments.

Familiarity with international testing standards (ASTM, BS, AASHTO, or equivalent).

Qualification

  • The candidate should hold bachelor degree in Civil Engineering with CGPA higher than 3.0.

Certification in laboratory safety or quality management systems is desirable.
