Job Function

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing high-quality care to animals. This role involves assisting with medical procedures, maintaining a clean and organized clinic, and ensuring the well-being and comfort of animals during their visit.

Responsibilities

  1. Animal Care and Handling
  • Assist veterinarians during examinations and procedures.
  • Safely restrain animals for treatment, diagnostics, and grooming.
  • Provide compassionate care to hospitalized and recovering animals.
  1. Clinical Support
  • Prepare examination rooms and surgical areas, ensuring cleanliness and readiness.
  • Assist in administering medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory samples, such as blood, urine, and feces.
  • Perform basic diagnostic tests under supervision, including taking vital signs and weight measurements.
  1. Client Interaction
  • Greet clients and their pets, ensuring a welcoming environment.
  • Educate clients on general pet care, post-treatment instructions, and preventive health measures.
  • Answer client questions and provide basic information about services.
  1. Clinic Maintenance
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in all areas of the clinic, including exam rooms, kennels, and surgical suites.
  • Sterilize instruments and ensure equipment is in proper working order.
  • Restock medical supplies and update inventory records.
  1. Administrative Duties
  • Schedule appointments and manage patient records.
  • Assist with billing and processing payments.
  • Maintain accurate logs of treatments, medications, and client interactions.
  1. Emergency Support
  • Assist in stabilizing and caring for animals during emergencies. 
    Monitor the condition of animals in critical care and report observations to the veterinarian.

Experience

Experience

  • Prior experience in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or related field (preferred).
  • Familiarity with handling animals of various temperaments and sizes.

Skills

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to handle animals safely and compassionately.
  • Basic knowledge of animal anatomy, behaviour, and medical terminology.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using clinic management software and IT tools.

Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology or veterinary medicine or any related field.
