Job Function
To assist the Principal Investigator (PI) of the project in achieving the aims and objectives of the research, including:
- Participate in the field collection of freshwater samples from various aquatic environments across Oman.
- Isolate and culture diatom species using microbiological techniques such as serial dilution and plating.
- Help in DNA extraction and sequencing processes for molecular analysis and species identification.
Help in maintaining lab cleanliness, equipment, and documentation required for research reports.
Responsibilities

- Participate in the field collection of freshwater samples from various aquatic environments across Oman.
- Isolate and culture diatom species using microbiological techniques such as serial dilution and plating.
- Help in DNA extraction and sequencing processes for molecular analysis and species identification.
Help in maintaining lab cleanliness, equipment, and documentation required for research reports
Experience
- Prior experience in sampling and handling environmental or aquatic biological samples.
- Hands-on laboratory experience with microbial culture techniques, especially with algae or diatoms, is highly preferred.
- Exposure to microscopy (light microscopy; SEM experience is a plus).
- Experience with sample preservation techniques, such as ethanol storage, Lugol’s iodine, or agar slants.
Familiarity with molecular biology techniques, such as DNA extraction, PCR, or genetic barcoding, is desirable.
Skills
The candidate must have the following skills and attributes:
- Ability to develop and maintain a research program and to publish in international journals.
- Excellent background in biology laboratory techniques.
- Competence in IT skills.
Ability to demonstrate leadership in outreach activities.
Qualification
Technician with a bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biological Sciences, or a closely related field.
